In a climate of heightened security concerns and increased visibility for transgender people, it is unsurprising that transphobic individuals seek to pose transgender people as a threatening “Other,” a source of terrorism either foreign or domestic. As with homosexuality, some countries try to frame transgender people as a creeping foreign influence, not indigenous to the native culture. English words like transgender, transsexual, and genderqueer might be seen as particularly foreign, even in cultures where a third sex or another form of gender variant population has lived in peace for many years.
